PHP50 MILLION AID TO TYPHOON YOLANDA (HAIYAN) SURVIVORS

The Quezon City Council headed by Vice Mayor Joy Belmonte instantaneously passed Resolution No. SP-5791, S-2013 authorizing the City Mayor, Honorable Herbert M. Bautista to extend financial assistance in behalf of the Quezon City Government in the amount of Fifty Million Pesos (Php 50,000,000.00 to the victims of Super Typhoon Yolanda at Forty Four (44)provinces of regions IV-A, IV-B, V, VI, VII, VIII, X, XI and Caraga and to support the relief operations of the Department of Social Welfare and Development for the provinces, cities and municipalities affected during its onslaught last November 8, 2013, to be taken from the Quezon City Disaster Risk Reduction Management Fund.

The P50-million financial assistance is entirely different from the support that Quezon City had already provided for its three adopted municipalities in Leyte namely Palompon, Tolosa and Santa Fe. Earlier, the city had sent contingents and have assessed and determined the situation and priority needs of the people in the areas in the said municipalities. Mayor Bautista, Vice Mayor Belmonte and Councilors Suntay, Ludovica and other city officials have themselves visited the said province.

Prior to this, The Office of the Vice Mayor had initiated its own fund & donation drive participated by its employees, the city councilors and their staff. The collections amounted to Php916,000.00 plus six (6) truck loads of assorted clothes, goods, toiletries, footwear and blankets.

Typhoon Yolanda struck the Philippines on November 8, 2013. It has been called the most powerful storm to make landfall in recorded history. The worst hit provinces were Leyte and Eastern Samar, with a combined population of 2.3 million, and which experienced sustained winds of 270 kph, gusts of up to 312 kph, and a storm surge as high as 7 meters or 21 feet. Presidential Proclamation No. 682, dated November 11, 2013, declared a State of National Calamity, affecting Samar, Leyte, Cebu, Iloilo, Capiz, Aklan, and Palawan.
